Finally, some justice, for Florida’s downtrodden masses!
In a rout that made her head spin (from something other than demonic possession), Angela Corey lost her bid for re-election in Tuesday’s primary.
In a twist, worthy of an M. Night Shyamalan film, Corey was ousted by her own party’s voters, after she made sure to exclude blacks, Latinos and, basically Democrats, in general, from voting at all!
It is safe to guess that even conservatives were simply embarrassed by the scrutiny their county was getting, as Corey made headlines, time and time again, for prosecuting minorities with a vengeance.
Most notable was her witch hunt against Marissa Alexander, the single mother, who fired a gun into the air, in order to scare off her abusive, estranged husband…as well as her botched prosecution of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin shooting.
Marissa got a 20-year sentence, while Zimmerman walked away a free man.
While she was in office, Corey prosecuted a 12-year old as an adult, for first degree murder. Under her watch, Duval County sent more people to be executed, per capita, than any county in the nation.
Her new replacement? None other than Melissa Nelson, a prosecutor who worked under Corey AND defended the 12 year-old boy against her.
Under Florida law, party primaries are open to all parties, if no one from another party is running. In what was later called ‘legal,’ Corey had her campaign manager file for a third party candidate, essentially blocking all but Republicans from voting.
Hoisted on her own petard, we can only hope that the message gets across to all of the other DA’s and prosecutors out there, with a penchant for racial profiling.
If the protesters bring shame and focus on your misdeeds, your own party will not hesitate to throw you to the wolves!
